Cloud Infrastructure Services 1: Managed Hosters

The Cloud Infrastructure Services report is a follow-on from last year’s Next-Generation Hosting reports, and the first such report for 2009. This report focuses on the managed hosting sector, describing changes taking place among the most prominent hosters that have made the paradigm shift to cloud services. T1R has noticed a greater degree of maturity and nuanced differences in the more sophisticated cloud infrastructure services that managed hosters are offering in the market. For the first time, T1R will provide the most accurate market-sizing numbers for the cloud infrastructure market, eliminating the meaningless numbers that have been thrown around in the market, and extrapolating just the pure-play cloud services numbers. The market will be further disaggregated into those providers that are fostering public and commodity cloud offerings, separate from those creating more complex private cloud environments.

The report also defines the difference between self-described infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) providers catering to the do-it-yourself developer community and the platform-as-a-service (PaaS) providers that are taking the additional steps to offer a variety of automated and managed services layered on top of that infrastructure for more demanding commercial customers. The challenge for managed hosters is to match the new functionality of virtualization and cloud-enablement technology with the demands of a more informed market, and appropriate new target sectors, while ensuring the retention of their existing customer base. T1R examines how the movers and shakers in this new market are responding to these challenges by profiling the most prominent managed hosting providers in North America and Europe offering cloud infrastructure services. In addition, results from the highly anticipated cloud infrastructure services survey are presented, showing where the challenges lie for service providers and illuminating the market drivers for cloud infrastructure services.
